SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Hours after the passage of California's redistricting measure known as Proposition 50, a proposed ballot initiative was filed Wednesday that would only allow the new congressional maps to be in effect for the 2026 election.
California voters Tuesday overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50, which tosses the state's congressional district map and replaces it with a new one that was drawn by Democrats. The maps will be in effect for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections before expiring in 2031. The redistricting power in California would then go back to the state's citizen-led commission.
The new proposed ballot initiative, filed by Orange County attorney James V. Lacy, would return the redistricting power back to the commission in 2028, and the maps drawn by the commission in 2021 would be reinstated for the rest of the decade.
"Under our constitutional amendment, the gerrymandered districts drawn by the State Legislature will be used for one election cycle then go away, as was promised," Lacy said in a statement.
"Gavin Newsom sold Prop. 50 to voters on the promise it would be temporary. This initiative is the insurance that his promise is kept," said political consultant Dave Gilliard.
The proponents of the measure filed the proposal at the California Attorney General's office for a title and summary before it can begin collecting signatures. It will need 874,641 valid signatures in order to land on the November 2026 ballot.
