SACRAMENTO, Calif. \u2014 A day after Proposition 50 was passed in California<\/span>, a proposed ballot initiative was introduced to limit the use of the redrawn maps for one Congressional term. <\/p>\n

\n

The proposed initiative, called the “Fair, Independent and Nonpartisan Redistricting Act,” was filed with the California Attorney General’s Office and would appear on the November 2026 ballot if enough signatures are collected. The measure aims to reinstate the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s Congressional districts in 2028, according to a news release. <\/p>\n

To qualify for the 2026 ballot, the initiative would need to collect and file 874,641 valid signatures with the county election offices.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder our constitutional amendment, the gerrymandered districts drawn by the State Legislature will be used for one election cycle then go away, as was promised,\u201d James V. Lacy, the measure’s lead proponent, said in the release. \u201cThe districts that were drawn by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission after the last census will be restored for the remainder of the decade.\u201d<\/p>\n

California voters approved Prop 50 in Tuesday’s Special Election. Under the approval, California’s congressional map will be redrawn, potentially giving Democrats five additional seats in the U.S. House.  <\/p>\n
